Wild edibles foraging workshop

You will never look at weeds in the same way again after taking part in this workshop.

Join wild food expert Diego Bonetto on a stroll and learn about the most common edible and medicinal plants that surround us all.

This workshop will give insights into the abundance of edibles thriving all over South East Australia and beyond. Typical species we will talk about include chickweed, dandelion, sowthistle, ironweed, flatweed, farmers’ friends and peppercress.

Discover the abundance of native and non-native edibles to be found underfoot. You will learn local stories of plant resilience woven with cultural trivia, migrant perspectives and native wisdom. We will discuss the role weeds play in repairing and building soil and you will find out how they have been used for food, craft and natural remedies. Most importantly, you will discover ways to safely harvest from your surroundings and enrich your diet with vitamins and minerals.

This workshop is designed to provide participants with solid skills in plant identification, re-learning old stories while paying respect to public and ancient resources.

Each participant will receive a booklet detailing common wild edibles.

There are no pre-requisites to this course, however as we will be walking in the bush and on uneven surfaces, you should be mobile enough to cover this terrain.

This event is not suitable for children under 4 years of age.

This is an all-weather event. Standard cancellation policy applies (refer to Booking Information section below).

The workshop is not a harvesting outing but an educational activity. We will only collect a few leaves and flowers here and there and with those, we will discuss ID features. The main aim of the workshop is to empower you with identification skills so that you can recognise with confidence some useful plants in your garden/surroundings.

Food

A light lunch will also be provided and we will be cooking the wild foods that are foraged.

You are welcome to bring your own snacks to supplement on the day.
